Volunteer Workdays
Despite involving the word “work,” a workday can actually be pretty fun; it is very gratifying to see how much progress can be made in just a few hours with a group of volunteers.

Volunteers use hand tools to remove smaller obstacles along the river trail. We leave the large logjams for our professional chainsaw crew. We also pick up trash as we go and leave the river cleaner than we found it.

If you’d like to be added to the workday mailing list, please contact Jane Trotter, jane_trotter@hotmail.com, (847) 340-8333.

Please contact the workday leaders listed below if you'd like to join us; we'd love to have you!

Let The River Be Your Guide

Working on the river can be as hard and physical as you desire.
Picking up trash – lopping off small branches – using the hand bow saw to cut small branches over and under the water
Removing small branches from the water – Cutting logs with a bow saw (we only do this up to 6” in dim.) – moving logs that are in the pathway - take apart a log jam - get in the water or stay dry your choice. WE NEED YOUR HELP

Recommended Equipment: BRING IS YOURSELF AND A FRIEND.
• Canoe or Kayak
• Life preserver --- Must be worn at all times on or in the water.
• Long handled pruning shears or loppers
• Handsaw / Bow saw
• Gloves – we will be picking up trash, etc.
• Cell phone in waterproof bag (optional)
• Change of clothes (optional)
• Water and snacks

B/SH HWTA has a two-person canoe that can be used for river workdays.
We must know in advance if the canoe is needed so please call so it can be brought along.
***Please do not bring hatchets, axes, machetes or chainsaws.
*** Chest waders or tall hip boots are a good idea for the springtime cold water.
Most folks wear shorts/ long pants with old tennis shoes or water shoes in warmer weather.

Please call and let us know if you can help. It makes for more timely and efficient planning for work teams.
