Michigan Family Independence Agency (FIA) assists residents of Van Buren County through various financial and social programs. Some examples of financial assistance programs are Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), State Family and Disability Assistance (SFA and SDA), Medicaid (MA), and Food Stamps. Social Services are provided through such programs as Children and Adult Protective Services, Delinquency and Foster Care, Employment and Training, Day Care Adoptive Service. While these programs are funded through State and Federal appropriations, additional funding is provided by Van Buren County in order to enhance services provided to citizens of Van Buren County.

Each year, approximately $30,000 has been appropriated to Van Buren County Family Independence Agency by the Van Buren County Board of Commissioners. Over 60% of the County appropraition provides medical and hospitalization coverage for special circumstances which do not meet federal and state program guidelines. Administrative expenses for Family Independence Agency Board members and managers accounts for an average of 30% and the remaining 10% provides for local program and staff development and Volunteer Services recognition expenditures.
