COUNTY CLERK
The County Clerk is an elected official, a constitutional office with a four-year term. The duties are prescribed by the State Statute.
The County Clerk is also Clerk of the Circuit Court, has control of court files, maintains all court cases filings, administers oaths and is keeper of Circuit Court Seal which is used to certify over 300 different documents.
The County Clerk is Register of County Vital Statistics. Records and Indexes are maintained on all Van Buren County births, deaths, and marriages. The Clerk's office accepts applications and issues all marriage licenses, reviews and records all county birth and death certificates, and issues certified copies as requested.
The County Clerk as Chief Election Officer for County supervises elections, receives and files county petitions, serves as member of County Election Commission and Clerk of the County Board of Canvassers. When Federal and State Elections are held the County tabulates returns on election night over Internet, www.electionmagic.com.
The County Clerk is Clerk of the County Board of Commissioners, prepares Minutes of the Board Meetings, and presents communications. The Clerk is responsible for maintaining county expeditures, and assists with county monthly claims, which are approved by Board of Commissioners. All account payable checks and county payroll checks preparation, tax withholding deposits, and all necessary reports are done in Clerk's office; also as Clerk of Court all submitted court vouchers, bond and restitution payments and processing passports are done in this office. The County Clerk signs all County Checks.
Various other duties of the County Clerk include Clerk of the Gun Board and issuing Concealed Weapons permits after approval, filing Assumed Name Certificates for businesses, processing Notary Public commissions, serves as member of County Plat Board, member County Apportionment Commission, filings of Veterans Discharges, also processing of qualified Veternan Dealth Benefits checks, and doing all necessary Oath of Office. The County Clerk is the Keeper of many County Records.
Office staff consists of current County Clerk, Chief Deputy Clerk, and seven deputy clerk positions.
