Animal Control

The Animal Control office is located one-quarter mile south of Red Arrow Highway on C.R. 681.

OFFICE AFTER HOURS call the Van Buren County Sheriff's Dept. @ 657-3101

There is Kennel Staff on duty during the hours the facility is open. Officers cover 632 square miles of Van Buren County roads. All domestic animal complaints are handled, ranging from the licensing of household pets to livestock running-at-large and animal cruelties.

All reported dog bites are checked for rabies, vaccinations and licenses. Dog bites and all other animals are then observed for a ten-day period.

The kennel facility, has 18 dog runs and 8 small animal cages. In addition there are two offices and a garage area. It is the goal of the facility to house strays and unwanted pets as long as possible.

Adoption fees are $10.00 per animal plus an additional $50.00 deposit toward the spraying/neutering of animals adopted from the shelter.

Redemption $20.00 and $5.00 QD
2nd Time Dog pick up $30.00
3rd Time $50.00
4th Time $100.00

Dog License Information
Michigan Compiled Law 287.266 requires that all dogs over 4 months old MUST have BOTH a current rabies vaccination AND a current dog license. 2015 Dog Licenses must be obtained by March 1, 2015, or as soon as a puppy has its first rabies shot (around 4 months old) License fees for puppies under 7 months old are $10 (neutering not required). After that date penalties apply.

Van Buren County offers both a 1-year and a 3-year dog license. In order to purchase a license, your dog must have a current rabies vaccination. Current is defined as either:
(1) 30 days remaining in order to purchase a 1-year license, or
(2) Expiring after April 1st of the year the license expires for a 3-year license (to purchase a 3-year license, vaccination expiration date would have to be April 1, 2014 or later.)

Dog license fees:

For licenses purchased December 1, 2014 through March 2, 2015:
1 year spayed/neutered $10.00
3 year spayed/neutered $30.00
1 year ‘unaltered’ dog $20.00
3 year ‘unaltered’ dog $60.00

For licenses purchased March 2, 2015 – November 30, 2015 (penalty period)
1 year spayed/neutered $20.00
3 year spayed/neutered $40.00
1 year ‘unaltered’ dog $40.00
3 year ‘unaltered’ dog $80.00

Van Buren County strongly urges spaying and neutering of all pets to reduce unwanted pet population, and ultimately, reduce costs to the County for care and destruction of those unwanted animals.
